music.

music..."
Listener Comment (March, 2006)
[The Olympia World Sacred Music Festival] "…will be an opportunity
for South Sound residents to experience and celebrate local
treasures such as RagDharma, a quartet from Olympia."
Sarah Jackson in The Olympian (May 15,
2005)
RagDharma is an ensemble of Olympia based musicians
studying and performing the classical music of North India in
a fusion of traditional eastern and modern western instruments.
RagDharma has been performing in Washington for over two years
and is currently comprised of Stephanie Donchey on sitar, Alexei
duCré on tabla, Celia Chantal on silver flute and Erik
Siraaj Correia on fretless bass.
RagDharma performs ragas and "light classical" pieces from the
North Indian Classical genre of music. Indian Classical music
has its roots in the sacred texts of India and has been performed
during the past several centuries for meditation, the practice
of yoga, healing, as well as entertainment purposes.
Hindustani classical music has its origins in the sacred texts
of India It has been passed down through the centuries in an
oral tradition, from guru (teacher) to disciple and is considered
a spiritual discipline highly regarded in India.
The melodic form of this music is known as "raga", and the cyclical
rythmic structure is called "tala." Indian classical music is
very much akin to western jazz in that during a performance,
the musicians are improvising (within a strict set of melodic
and rhythmic guidelines) most of what is played.
